RAW POWER: SHEPARD FAIREY
The Art Spot & Parlor Gallery | Asbury Park
September 17th , 2026 – October 16th , 2026
Jonathan LeVine Projects, Parlor Gallery and Wooden Walls proudly presents Raw Power, a selection of works by Shepard Fairey to be jointly exhibited at Parlor Gallery and The Art Spot in Asbury Park, NJ.
RAW POWER. Don’t you try, don’t you try to tell me what to do! The energy of Iggy and the Stooges anthem “Raw Power” is woven throughout Shepard Fairey’s music related art as well as his pro-justice themed works. Music, with its emotional power and democratic culture has long been a model for Fairey’s approach to creating and proliferating accessible art laden with social-provocation. The exhibitions will showcase over 150 works, across the two spaces, including paintings, mixed media works on paper, hand-painted-multiples, mono engravings, and prints on wood and metal. Limited edition screen prints, many long unavailable, will be for sale at the galleries as well. Raw Power is supported in-part by funding through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s (NJEDA) Activation, Revitalization, and Transformation (A.R.T.) – Phase II Grant Program.
Leading up to the exhibitions, Fairey will also create a large-scale mural at the Sunset Avenue Pavilion along the boardwalk in Asbury Park. The mural is a part of PlusOne, the inaugural three-weekend art party produced by Wooden Walls Public Art Project and supported by funding through the New Jersey Economic Development Authority’s (NJEDA) Activation, Revitalization, and Transformation (A.R.T.) – Phase II Grant Program. PlusOne will bring new murals, immersive installations, exhibitions, art tours, interactive experiences and more to Asbury Park. Inspired by the city’s amusement and music legacies, PlusOne will turn Asbury Park into an open creative studio where art becomes a shared public experience.
Complementing Fairey’s solo presentation at Parlor Gallery, The Collaborators brings together artists participating in PlusOne, including Swoon, Buff Monster, Add Fuel, and Adam Wallacavage, whose creative histories and artistic connections intersect with Fairey’s own. Featuring paintings, sculpture, photography and a site-specific installation, the companion exhibition celebrates the relationships, collaborations, and creative communities that have helped to Asbury Park’s ever-evolving arts landscape.
The exhibitions will be on view from September 17 through October 18, with an opening reception at both locations. Join us at The Art Spot on September 17, from 6 PM – 10 PM; and at Parlor Gallery on September 18, from 6 PM – 10 PM.
The Art Spot is open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 AM until 6 PM; Parlor Gallery is open to the public Mondays, 12 PM – 5 PM, Thursdays, 12 PM – 7 PM, Fridays and Saturdays, 12 PM – 9 PM, and Sundays, 11 AM – 7 PM.
Shepard Fairey was born in 1970, in Charleston, South Carolina, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. He received a BA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991. In 1989, Fairey launched an ambitious campaign of stickers and posters featuring a stenciled image of the wrestler Andre the Giant. In the two decades since then, his artwork has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums around the world. Fairey designed the iconic “Hope” graphic for Barack Obama used during the 2007-2008 presidential campaign. In January 2009, during inauguration week, the “Hope” image was acquired by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, and became part of their permanent collection. In February of 2009, a mid-career survey of Fairey’s work over the past 20 years was the subject of his first major museum exhibition at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. In 2010, the show traveled to The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, PA, and Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, OH. Fairey’s work is included in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; theLos Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and the National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC.
